Living on Hwy 7A: the commute math between Port Perry, Lindsay, and Peterborough
By Keith Williams & Lisa C. Follows · Willows Realty Group
Buyers looking at 170 Hwy 7A almost always ask the same question before anything else: what are the drives actually like? Here is the honest, arithmetic answer for the Janetville area, based on standard route calculations in typical traffic. Times shift with the season, the road crews, and rush hour, but the shape of the day stays the same.
The daily loop
From the property, Port Perry is roughly 27 kilometres and about 20 to 30 minutes west along Hwy 7A, which puts the historic downtown and the Lake Scugog waterfront within a genuinely easy drive. Lindsay is closer as the crow flies: about 20 kilometres and 20 to 25 minutes via the back roads to the Hwy 7-35 corridor. For groceries, services, restaurants, and the hospital, both towns do the job.
Peterborough sits about 55 to 65 kilometres out, a 45- to 60-minute run that passes through or around Lindsay depending on the route. That is an easy threshold for weekend trips to the university, hospital specialists, and the city's restaurant and arts scene, and quite doable as a daily drive for the determined.
The GTA question
For anyone who needs the eastern GTA, Ajax is roughly 68 kilometres and about 50 minutes by road; Oshawa and Whitby fall in the 40- to 60-minute band. Downtown Toronto is around 108 kilometres and close to two hours in good conditions, so this is not a daily-commute-to-Bay-Street location. It is the classic long-weekend setup: country all week, city when you plan for it.
The honest caveat: morning and evening rush on the 401 and 407 corridor adds real time, and Hwy 7A is a two-lane country route in parts, so winter weather matters. Anyone making the trip regularly should map the route at the same hour they would drive it, twice, in both directions, before deciding.
| Destination | Drive | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Port Perry | 20–30 min | ≈ 27 km |
| Lindsay | 20–25 min | ≈ 20 km |
| Peterborough | 45–60 min | ≈ 60 km |
| Ajax (east GTA) | ≈ 50 min | ≈ 68 km |
| Downtown Toronto | ≈ 2 hr | ≈ 108 km |
Why the commute is only half the story
What surprises most buyers is how much the "commute" shrinks when work itself moves. The property has Starlink installed and Wi-Fi connected garage doors, which is a practical setup for running a business from home: video calls, cloud files, and deliveries to the door without fighting the 401. For tradespeople and small business owners, the oversized garage and workshop mean the commute is often just the walk across the yard.
The rhythm of this corner of Kawartha Lakes is the point: quiet roads, lake weekends in Port Perry, and a town like Lindsay close enough for errands. If that sounds like your kind of math, come do the drive yourself. We will happily schedule the showing around it.
