Scugog Township, Ontario.

Scugog Township is the rural heart around Lake Scugog: farm country, tree nurseries, vineyards, and the historic hamlets of Seagrave, Caesarea, Greenbank, and Blackstock. The property at 170 Hwy 7A sits just outside the Scugog town line, so this is the township on the doorstep.

The township · Durham Region

Farm country with a lake in the middle of it.

Scugog Township was created in 1974 from the amalgamation of the townships of Scugog, Reach, and Cartwright, plus the town of Port Perry, which remains its commercial anchor. Outside the main town, life runs on the concession grid of the original townships: working farms, tree and nursery operations, field crops, vineyards, and dairy and beef farms tucked into hamlets like Seagrave, Caesarea, Greenbank, and Blackstock.

Lake Scugog anchors the middle of it. The lake was formed in 1834 when a dam at Lindsay raised the water level across low-lying land, and its name is said to come from a Mississauga word roughly translated as waves leaping over a canoe. It is known for walleye, bass, and muskie fishing, boating, and some of the largest natural wild rice beds in Ontario.

The hamlets

Small communities with long histories.

Each hamlet keeps its own character: Seagrave on the west side of the lake, Caesarea with its old lakeside resort hotels, Greenbank along the Hwy 12 corridor, and Blackstock with its heritage hotels. Together they support the tree farms, nurseries, field crops, vineyards, and dairy and beef operations that make Scugog the working countryside around Lake Scugog.

Lake Scugog

A working lake with a big wild rice bed.

Lake Scugog is a large, shallow lake formed in 1834 when a dam at Lindsay raised water levels across the low-lying land. Today it is the recreation heart of the township: walleye, bass, and muskie fishing, boating, lake events, and one of the largest natural wild rice beds in Ontario. In season, cottagers and day-trippers share the water with working farms along its shore.

From 170 Hwy 7A, the Scugog town line is just down the road, and the lake's west shore is an easy drive west through Port Perry. For the full picture of the drives, see our commute post.
